Globo’s telenovela ‘Rising Sun (working title)’ shows how passion emerges even in the most unlikely place

The plot references the Italian and Japanese immigration, and features the charm and joy of the Brazilian people

With a mix of romance, comedy, and lots of excitement, ‘Rising Sun (working title)’ is one of Globo’s releases for the NATPE 2017. The telenovela is about an unlikely love story between two childhood friends linked by complicity throughout generations. The plot takes place in the fictional Arraial do Sol Nascente, a charming resort town, filled with paradisiacal beaches, excitement, and romance; the backdrop of this love story is the kaleidoscope of cultures and ethnicities that is Brazil.

The Tanaka and De Angeli clans, despite their distinct origins – one Japanese and the other Italian – nurture a bond of friendship that began with the arrival of immigrants to Brazil, when they met at a train station, more than 50 years ago. In the story, Alice (Giovanna Antonelli, ‘Rules of the Game’) is the adopted daughter of Japanese Kazuo Tanaka (Luis Melo, ‘Trail of Lies’), while Mario (Bruno Gagliasso, ‘Ambitious Women’) is the grandson of Italian couple Geppina (Aracy Balabanian, ‘Now Generation’) and Gaetano (Francisco Cuoco, ‘Boogie Oogie’). Despite their very different ages, ways, and lives, the two grew up together and have developed a friendship as strong as that of their families. When Alice decides to move away to study in Japan, Mario realizes his actual feelings and an unexpected passion for his childhood friend arises. Determined to live this romance, the young Italian descendant will do everything in his power to win his friend’s heart. However, this love story has another obstacle: The manipulative Cesar (Rafael Cardoso, ‘Empire’), who plots to keep Alice away from Mario.

In addition to this love triangle, the plot features other stories and characters who live in the sunny, colorful Arraial do Sol Nascente. Italians, Japanese, tattoo artists, rockers, bikers, surfers, and a community of fishers meet and mingle. This diversity of cultures, flavors, and styles characterizes the essence of the people of Brazil, a mixed country that can aggregate so much diversity and friendliness in one place.

Each core needed special attention to construct this fictional story. Colors and decoration pieces, even food and clothing were thought out and highlighted in the scenes to create a diversified universe that was rich in details.

The cast also includes Henri Castelli (‘Caribbean Flower’), Marcello Novaes (‘Brazil Avenue’), and Letícia Spiller (‘Precious Pearl’), among others.
